I haven’t used shampoo in nine months. Before October 2016, I used shampoo nearly every day of my life. I’m a bit of a clean freak, so the thought of no shampoo had as much appeal as a daily dumpster dive. I wouldn’t have done it except for Julie.
“Your hair is so beautiful,” I told my coworker. “What’s your secret?”
Her answer: No shampoo. She uses only conditioner, and her hair looks incredibly healthy. She told me that it might take a month for my scalp and hair to adjust to no shampoo. That’s about what it took.
Now, I just work conditioner through my scalp and hair in the shower. Some conditioners work better than others. I don’t spend money on shampoo. My hair is clean, and it feels softer than ever.
Have you ever thought about shampoo?
Shampoo as it is known today was introduced in the 1930s. It costs money, takes time, harms the environment, damages hair, and perpetuates its own existence.
It never occurred to me — only because I never stopped to think about it — that shampoo wasn’t necessary for clean hair.
It makes me wonder: What else do I do just because I’ve always done it? What do I believe just because I’ve always believed it?
